inside of the girl's heart
Heero Yuy
Heero and Relena really seem to be intertwined by the strings of fate. Their first meeting took place in AC 191 when they were both eleven, as depicted in the Episode Zero manga. They made a chance encounter when Heero found his way to the same school Relena was in. After a few days he disappeared without a trace. Though it’s never confirmed that this boy is really the same Heero Yuy from 195, being that there is no record of Heero ever coming to Earth before Operation Meteor and neither Heero or Relena seem to remember this meeting in the series.Their second encounter was a day before the beginning of Operation Meteor, April 6, AC 195. Heero was supposed to assassinate Minister Darlian for his knowledge of Operation M, but Heero decided to do “what his heart told him” and chose to ignore the orders to kill him. Relena had looked up to the top of the building Heero was standing on and saw his figure, but he was much too far away for anyone make out his appearance. It isn't until April 7, that the two of them would meet and their lives would change forever.
Relena Darlian had grown up in a world closed off from everything else, not having anyone see her for who she was. Her father would take her into space, but never spend anytime with her. The students at her school saw her as some untouchable princess instead of a fellow classmate. So when the boy code named Heero Yuy was found washed up on a beach, he changes everything around for Relena and becomes the one worried about her seeing him. This is what first attracts Relena to Heero and drives her to want to know more about him. When he promises to kill her the next time they speak, she is completely overwhelmed. She had never been told something like that in her life and his threat only strengthens his pull on her. While she wishes to learn more about him, he also opens her eyes to the real world engulfed in a war. Heero began to stand for everything Relena wasn't and didn't have in herself: the strength and courage to act on her emotions and do what she deemed right. So Relena found herself following in his steps, doing things she felt on impact, while trying to find her courage through him.
When Relena meets Doctor J, he tells her that Heero actually is a very gentle person, but to stay away from him if she values her life. Even with that warning, Relena still wanted to be around Heero even if he easily could kill her. So when Heero leaves again with Duo episodes later, Relena says that she's "off to her own battlefield." She can finally start to believe in herself and stop relying on Heero for strength, but find her own strength within on her own.
These two constantly complement each other. Relena's belief in total pacifism gives Heero hope that someday this world that has only caused him to kill so many innocent people, can become peaceful again. On the other hand, Heero's knowledge in the battlefield and in combat gives Relena a little bit of input on what to do in handling a difficult situation in war, as with their time together in the Cinq Kingdom. They each continue to rely on each other and help one another in their times of need. Heero promised to protect Relena, saying it's the only thing he can do for her; while Relena helped Heero understand that emotions are needed even in the battlefield, as much has he tried to detach the two from another. For the first time he found someone he can truly trust and believe in, and Relena does the same.
Heero and Relena also grew to have a deep respect and understanding of each other and because of this, Relena doesn't try to force her feelings onto Heero during their times together. Though by the end of the series, it seems fairly obvious that Heero understands her feelings towards him. She cares deeply for him and loves him with all of her heart. Yet because of her love, she doesn't want to risk and ruin the connection they already have. As long as he's happy, she's happy and it doesn't matter if he won't return her affections of love in the end. (Just read the words in her images songs.) It seems to show through Heero's own actions, that along with wanting to protect her, has begun to really care for as well. She’s the one always returning to his mind, and him to her's. They are the two characters through out the entire series that can be seen uttering each others names over and over, (usually in a time of need, support or guidance) more than anyone else.
In Heero's case, his feelings started as a deep respect for Relena and the need to protect her above all else, and slowly started to grow into something deeper by the end of the series and in through Endless Waltz. Heero knows he will act on his emotions and if he does end up falling in love with Relena, there is little doubt that he would those feelings back; though both Heero and Relena are far from being both emotionally and mentally stable enough to have a romantic relationship. Heero isn't this emotionless perfect soldier that fans picture him as. He's the farthest from the 'perfect soldier'; he acts on his emotions even though he tried locking them away while on the battlefield. He's unable to feel nothing for his enemy, as can be seen when he kills the Alliance pacifist leaders. He is confused and guilt ridden over his mistakes. He is truly a kind person, but when it comes to his mission, he tries to lock away who he really is, because that’s what he’s been taught. At the end of EW, he's able to follow his emotions and let them take him to the next chapter in his life. If that is back to Relena or somewhere else, is unknown. They each made such a huge impact on each other’s lives, allowing them to grow as people through a war. Though there is nothing officially stated in canon that the two of them will have any type of romantic relationship (if the Blind Target manga adaptation can be considered canon, then there are returned feelings on Heero’s end) there is no doubt they will continue to be a part of each other lives in some way. These two characters really can't seem to exsist without one another, even after the war is over.
